For centuries the most popular month of the year for weddings was June, but the reason may surprise you. During the 1400s and 1500s, May was the month designated for the "annual bathe". Since the people of the time smelled the best during the month of June, many families chose to plan their weddings in the month of June. The first handmade bridal shower gifts were probably the wedding guests taking a bath or shower.

What were the first wedding and bridal shower favors? Centuries ago, European aristicrats in Italy and France sent wedding guests home with ceramic boxes filled with sugary candies, called bonbonnieres and a form of good luck. The boxes were usually filled with five almonds or pieces of candy which symbolized fertility, health, wealth, happiness and longevity. The first wedding favors were quite yummy!
