Is the Art of Crafting Lost?

Crocheting History  : Crocheting is the art of forming fabric by looping yarn together in rows or three dimensional geometric patterns with a single crochet hook. Crocheting became a way for the working poor in Ireland and Northern France to make money by producing a cheaper form of lace and selling their creations to the working class. With the help of Queen Victoria crocheted fashions became a more respected form of clothing. Queen Victoria purchaced Irish made crochet lace and even yearned to crochet simple garments herself.

In modern times, the art of crochet is revived with many new artisans taking up the art of crocheting when crocheted baby blankets, sweaters, and doilies. Many yarn stores are offering classes in how to teach the different crochet methods such as Filet crochet, broomstick lace, cro-hooking, Tunisian crochet, hairpin lace, and the traditional Irish crochet.

Crocheting Methods
Irish Crochet - A type of lace consisting of separate crocheted pieces applied to a mesh background.

Filet Crochet : A type of crochet lace formed with only two crochet stiches : the chain stitch and double crochet stitch. Using fine crochet thread this technique is suitable for crocheting doilies, table clothes, and place settings.

Tunisian Crochet : This crochet method combines the art of crocheting and knitting because the method requires single elogated hook (crochet), called an afghan hook, and the stitching rows back and forth over two halves without turning the artwork. Tunisian crochet produces a dense fabric with a defined front and back side.

Broomstick Lace : Dating back to the 1800s, this crochet method requires a crochet hook and a thin elogated object, like a broomstick. Eventually, a knitting needle replaced the use of a broomstick.
