Paper Plate Uncle Sam Hat

Materials Needed

1. Paper plate

2. Construction paper - Red and White

3. Tissue paper - Dark Blue

4. Scissors

5. Stapler with staples

Instructions

1. Cut the center out of your paper plate.

2. Cut out a strip of blue tissue paper, thick enough to wrap the rim of your paper plate. Extra paper will make the brim of your Uncle Sam Hat thicker.

3. Cut out strips of white and red paper. We suggest two inches thick. All strips should be the same dimension.

4. Fold each strip of paper inward about an inch.

5. Line the inside of your hat brim with the sheets of paper. Connect the creased ends to the under side of your hat brim. Staple into place.

6. Add white then red, and repeat the strips. Overlap each strip on top of the other, so no one strips is overlapped by two side by side strips.

7. Once all of the strips have been added, shave off the top of your hat, so that all of your strips are even.

8. Now create the seams for your Uncle Sam Hat. Cut out one inch thick strips of blue tissue paper. Glue them to the blue rim, up each seam. Fold over the excess blue tissue paper and glue it to the inside of the top of your Uncle Sam hat.

9. Add embellishments -- stars, glitter, ribbons.

10. Now you have your own homemade Uncle Sam hat that will be a great party craft for kids!
