    Paper Plate Easter Bonnet

The history of the Easter bonnet goes back to the first Easter Parade held in New York in the 1870s. Here are instructions for making your own Easter bonnet using this simple idea using materials like a paper plate, wrapping paper, velvet ribbon, and paper flowers!

In your Easter bonnet, with all the frills upon it
You'll be the grandest gal in the Easter parade.
I'll be all in clover, and when they look us over
We'll be the proudest couple in the Easter parade.
    --Irving Berlin's "Easter Parade" (1948)
    Time to Complete : < 30 minutes
    Difficulty : Easy
Submitted By : Crafty Shops Creative Staff
    Materials Needed
    1. Paper plate - the larger plates work best!
    2. Wrapping paper - we used pastel pink. We also suggest Easter printed wrapping paper.
    3. Construction paper - Easter colors like pink, purple, yellow, and blue for making your paper flowers
    4. Velvet ribbon - You want stiff ribbon so that it helps to stiffen the dome shape in your Easter bonnet.
    5. Small bowl to help your mold the dome shape in the top of your Easter bonnet.
    6. Scissors
    7. Glue - paper glue and tacky glue (gluing the velvet ribbon to your Easter hat
    8. Scotch tape
    9. Pencil
    10. Needle and Thread

    Instructions
    1. Lay your paper plate on a flat surface, so that the place you would eat on is facing down.
    2. Apply glue across the entire top surface of your paper plate. Make sure you add the glue to the rim as well.
    3. Paste your wrapping paper to the paper plate, molding it to the plate with your fingers or even the handles of your scissors.
    4. Cut the outline around your paper plate at least 2-4 inches away from the plate.
    5. Fold the paper under and tape it to the underside rim of your paper plate. The paper will buckle creating the bunchy effect. More paper makes your rim wider.
    6. Lay your paper plate with the good side down. Lay the bottom of your bowl on the plate. Use it as a guide to make a circle. You do not want the circle to be wider than the bowl, but larger than the bottom of the bowl.
    7. Poke a hole in the center of your circle and then cut the circle out.
    8. Cut out a piece of wrapping paper large enough to cover the top of your bowl. Use the bowl to push the piece of wrapping paper through the hole in your paper plate. Tape the edges down. Then remove the bowl.
    9. Using tacky glue, glue the velvet ribbon around the dome in your Easter bonnet. The ribbon should cover the opening and support the dome.
    10. Make a large bow using the same velvet ribbon and paste it to the hat in the appropriate place.
    11. How to draw the paper flowers - draw intersecting bows ties making an evenly distributed cross. We made flowers with about two inches long on each of the four sides. Cut out a yellow dot and paste it to the center. Fold the petals towards the cen

    13. Using a needle and thread, sew two strips of the velvet ribbon to the inside of the Easter bonnet where the velvet band goes around. The strands must be long enough to tie a nice big bow under the neck of the child.
    14. Add glue to the back enter parts of the flower and glue them to the Easter hat below the velvet ribbon band. We interchanged pink, blue, and purple paper flowers.
    15. Use other springtime, festive decorations for your Easter bonnet to make it fresh and unique. Now you have an Easter Bonnet to wear to your next Easter Parade!
