    Irish Claddagh Rainbow Flag

Celebrate St. Patrick's Day by making an Irish Claddagh Rainbow flag. The ancient claddagh symbol decorates the face of the paper plate while multi-colored streams extend from the jewels on the crown. Kids can learn about Irish heritage and make a fun Irish craft.
    Time to Complete : < 30 minutes
    Difficulty : Easy
Submitted By : Crafty Shops Creative Staff
    Materials Needed
    1. Large Paper Plate - The stiff kind works best
    2. Green paint and a paint brush or green crayons
    3. Construction paper (orange, yellow, red, purple, blue)
    4. Pencil
    5. Scissors
    6. Glue
    7. Scotch tape
    8. Tissue paper (red, purple, blue, orange)

    Instructions
    1. Lay your paper plate flat and cover the white surface with either green paint or crayons. Lay newspaper down to protect your table.
    2. Cut out a red heart with construction paper. The heart should cover half of your paper plate. Have your child hold the heart to see how it will fit inside of her hands.
    3. Have your child lay her hands palms flat onto a sheet of orange paper. Trace around her hands continue past the wrists to a few inches up her arm. Cut out what you traced.
    4. Attach the hands you cut out to the heart with glue.
    5. Cut out a basic crown shape with yellow construction paper. Lay your heart on top of the crown near the bottom edge. Trace the curved top of the heart into your crown, so it will rest on top of your heart like a puzzle.
    6. Cut out diamond shapes into purple, blue, orange, and red paper to make jewels for your crown. You may want to explain to the child that red jewels are rubies and blue jewels are saphires.
    7. Lay your claddagh parts onto the top of the paper plate. Using your pencil trace two rectangular openings at the bottom of the claddagh symbol and at the top. Cut them out.
    8. Glue your claddagh symbols including the hands, heart and crown to the center of your paper plate.
    9. Cut out 1 inch X 15 inch strips of tissue paper out of your red, purple, orange, and blue tissue paper.
    10. Making a pattern that matches the jewels in your crown top, string the tissue paper through the hole at the top of your claddagh symbol. When finished the streamers will appear to extend from the crown in your royal claddagh symbol.
    11. Now you have an Irish Claddagh Rainbow Flag to parade around your backyard or present to your friend as a St. Patricks Day gift!
