Family Tree Craft - Overlay Map

Add some creativity to your family tree research display by making a Family Tree Overlay Map. Show how the area where your family lived has changed throughout the years with this family tree craft.

Materials Needed

1. Construction paper

2. Scissors

3. Glue

4. Plastic Dividers

5. Ruler

6. Pensils, Crayons, Markers

Instructions

1. Make the base page that will show the landscape that is constant. In our example, we show a lake, bridge, and intersection of roads.

2. Make a list of buildings, such as businesses, subdivisions, farms, and such and note when they were built.

3. Use one over lay page as a guide. Use the ruler and draw intersecting lines, forming a gride. You will use this grid to accurately place your symbols.

4. Formulate a map symbols list. We used an uneven circle with three house symbols to respresent a subdivision on our map. We also used a box with a cross to represent a church on our map. Use creativity to design your map symbols, but make sure your

5. Set out a plastic divider for each time period. Then put the base page first, then lay the grid divider, then a second divider. On the second divider paste your map symbols for that time period. For each additonal time period, add another plastic

6. Once you have completed your map, you will be surprised at how much has changed in the area that your family planted its roots. Plus, you will have an easy to make craft that will work well with your family tree.
